Friday December 2, 2011

The weather is getting almost balmy here in McMurdo and the snow has been melting every day for quite some time now. As this happens, all the melt water runs through town in little rivers and people have had to make water bars to guide all of the runoff down to the ocean. Here, you can see steam coming off of the ground and a really big runoff stream.

Sandwich and I went to reserve some snowmobiles on Friday morning. On our way, we saw this massive tracked vehicle that is essentially the ambulance/fire truck for the ice runway. It was pretty sweet!

Sandwich, Isaac and I took snowmobiles out today to return the extra fish that we won't use for experiments. Here are several pictures of us having a blast on our snowmobiles.

On our way out, we saw a long Emperor Penguin. This was the first time that I have ever seen an Emperor all alone. I have seen and heard of Adelie Penguins being alone before, but never an Emperor. It didn't come up to us, but I got a great picture of it "paddling" away with Mt. Erebus in the background.

We rode out to Cape Evans near where we caught most of our fish this season. There was an open dive hole that we returned the fish into so we didn't even have to break out our Jiffy Drill!

After returning the fish, we walked over to the Terra Nova hut (aka the Scott Hut). We took some pictures of the outside but the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust was doing some major restoration work on the inside of the hut so we didn't go inside this time.

On the way back, we stopped near an iceberg and took some really cool pictures.

Me with an ice axe in front of the iceberg.

I think that the next five pictures are some of my favorites of the entire trip. The are just breathtaking. I have never seen ice look like this before. It was incredible.

To finish off the day, we broke out some fish costumes that Sandwich had. The costumes have a long and storied history that I won't get into. However, she and Isaac and two others wore them for Halloween and won "Best Group Costume." They looked great out on the sea ice too! As you can probably guess, we had a fantastic day!
