PENGUIN DAY!!! Okay, I'll get to the penguins in a bit, but as far as what we actually came down here to do (fish and do research on fish), we went fishing again. Today, I took two people from McMurdo who work as janitors and in the galley. I love being able to take people out fishing with us because they are all such hard workers, they are always so excited to go out, and they all have such amazing and interesting stories to tell.
Normally, when we go out fishing, we are not in fish huts. Most of the time, we have to drill our own holes with a normal gas powered drill called a Jiffy drill. The ice was so incredibly hard and thick yesterday it took a long long time to drill through six feet of ice. Here we are driving out to Inaccessible island, Jiffy drilling and fishing.
Here are a couple of awesome shots of our Pisten Bully with Mt. Erebus (the worlds Southern most volcano) in the background.
We caught 30 fish really quickly and then it was time to head home. However, as strange as it sounds, there are traffic jams even here in Antarctica. We got held up by four Emperor penguins on our way home. They were just gliding on their bellies next to the road! We made sure to take a moment and recognize how lucky we are to be where we are and how incredible this place is! It was an amazing day!
